V-Blocks and Magnetic Bases for Drilling Round Stock
Round stock does not sit still. A cylinder wants to roll. When you drill into it, cutting forces from the drill want to spin it further. Without the right workholding, you get a part that rotates mid-cut, a wandering hole, and a real risk of the workpiece catching and swinging into your hand or the column.
V-blocks and magnetic bases are the two standard solutions. Both are cheap relative to scrapped parts and injury costs. Here is when to use each and how to set them up correctly.
V-Blocks: The Primary Tool for Round Stock
A V-block is a hardened steel block with a 90° V-groove machined into it that locates round stock precisely — the centerline of any cylinder rests at the same height relative to the block's base regardless of diameter. That geometric consistency is what makes V-blocks so useful for layout, inspection, and drilling.
Sizes and selection
V-blocks come in matched pairs (always use them as a pair for long stock) and range from 1" to 6"+ groove length. Match the V-block size to the stock diameter:

The stock should sit in the V with the sides touching the groove faces — not riding on top, not sinking all the way to the bottom. If stock is too small, it bottoms out and sits off-center. If too large, it perches on top of the V and is unstable.
Clamps with V-blocks
Every quality V-block set includes a U-clamp with a hold-down bolt. Use it. The U-clamp drops over the stock, the bolt threads into the V-block base, and the stock is locked in the groove. Without the clamp, the V-block just prevents rolling — it does not prevent lifting. When the drill plunges through the bottom of the stock, cutting forces can lift the part right out of the V. The clamp prevents this.
Locating the hole on round stock
Finding the center of a cylinder for drilling requires a scribed centerline or a layout dye mark. The fastest accurate method:
- Set the stock in the V-block on a surface plate.
- Use a height gauge or surface gauge to scribe a line at the spindle centerline height.
- Rotate 90° and scribe a second line.
- The intersection of the two lines is the centerline of the cylinder — the correct drill entry point for a truly centered cross-hole.
- Center punch the intersection before drilling.
Using a V-block at the drill press
- Clamp the V-block to the drill press table, not just to the part. A free V-block can shift during drilling.
- Align the V-block so the spindle centerline is directly above the V groove centerline before you locate the part.
- If drilling multiple pieces to the same location, use a stop block against the end of the V-block so each part sits at the same axial position.
Magnetic Bases: For Steel Parts on a Steel Table
A magnetic base (magnetic chuck or chuck block) uses a switchable permanent magnet to hold ferrous workpieces directly to the drill press table without clamps. They are fast — drop the part, flip the lever, drill. They are most useful for short production runs of steel parts that would otherwise require repeated clamp setups.
Limitations
- Only works on ferromagnetic materials: steel, cast iron. Does not hold aluminum, brass, stainless (non-magnetic grades), or non-metals.
- Holding force varies by part contact area. Small contact patches = low holding force. Large flat surfaces = strong hold.
- Round stock on a magnetic base is still free to roll unless you pair it with a V-block (V-block plus magnetic table is a common combination).
- Through-holes near breakthrough can reduce holding force as chips and coolant get between part and surface.
Setting holding force
Before drilling, estimate the torque the drill will generate and compare it to the magnetic holding force. Most magnetic base tables specify holding force in pounds. A 1/2" drill in steel generates enough torque to spin a part that has poor contact area. Always test by hand — try to slide the part manually after engaging the magnet. If it moves easily, clamp it additionally. If it does not move, you are likely safe for light drilling.
Combining V-Blocks and Magnetic Tables
For steel round stock, combining both is the most secure setup available without custom fixtures:
- Set V-block on the magnetic table.
- Engage the magnet to hold the V-block.
- Place round stock in the V-block groove.
- Apply the U-clamp over the stock.
- Clamp or bolt the V-block itself to the table as a secondary measure for heavy cuts.
