Most drill press tables can be tilted for angled drilling — and most shop drill presses are never checked for squareness after they leave the factory floor or after a table-tilt job. The table may be off a degree or two and nobody notices because the holes look okay to the eye. But a degree of table tilt at 1″ depth means the bottom of the hole is 0.017″ off from vertical. Try reaming that to a close fit and see what happens.
Tramming a drill press takes under 20 minutes and should be done at machine setup, after any table tilt operation, and periodically as a maintenance check.
What Tramming Means
Tramming is the process of aligning the machine table so it's perpendicular to the spindle axis. A trammed table means a drill entering straight down produces a hole perpendicular to the table surface. An out-of-tram table produces holes that lean — sometimes visibly, often subtly enough that you don't notice until you try to press a pin in or ream to tolerance.
The term comes from mill tramming (tramming the head), but the concept is identical for drill presses.
Tools You Need
- Dial test indicator (DTI) — 0.001″ resolution minimum, 0.0005″ preferred
- Indicator holder that chucks into the drill press spindle (magnetic base arm works if it reaches)
- A piece of ground flat stock or a known-flat reference surface — or use the table itself if it's clean
- A 1-2-3 block or toolmaker's parallel if your table surface is questionable
- Wrench for the table lock nut
Method 1: Sweep Method (Most Accurate)
This is the correct method for a precision check:
- Chuck a straight bar or drill shank in the drill press chuck — not a drill (flutes are not round) but a ground arbor, a straight extension, or even a precision dowel pin
- Mount the DTI to the arbor so the indicator tip sweeps in a circle when the spindle is rotated by hand
- Position the indicator tip to contact the table surface — about 4–6 inches from center
- Zero the indicator at the 12 o'clock position (facing you)
- Rotate the spindle slowly by hand (with power OFF) and read the indicator at 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions
- A perfectly trammed table reads 0.000″ at all positions
- Difference between 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock indicates front-to-back tilt; difference between 3 and 9 indicates left-to-right tilt
Interpreting Readings
- Under 0.002″ total variation on a 6″ sweep: acceptable for general shop work
- Under 0.001″: acceptable for close-tolerance reaming and precision work
- Over 0.005″: correct before precision work
Method 2: Square and Feeler Gauge (Quick Check)
For a fast check when a DTI isn't handy:
- Lower a ground rod or a straight drill shank into the chuck (don't tighten all the way — just enough to hold position)
- Place a precision square on the table surface next to the rod — both front-to-back and left-to-right
- Check gap between the rod and the square blade with feeler gauges
- Adjust until gap is equal top and bottom on both axes
This method is less accurate than a DTI sweep but catches gross misalignment quickly.
Making the Adjustment
Drill press tables tilt on a pivot with a lock nut or clamping bolt. The process:
- Identify the high side from your DTI readings — this is the side that needs to come down (table tilts away from high side)
- Loosen the table lock nut — usually a large hex nut under or behind the table, or a lever lock
- Make small adjustments — the table is sensitive. A 1/4 turn on the lock nut can move the table several thousandths on a 6″ sweep
- Re-measure after each adjustment — approach the target from the same direction each time to avoid backlash error in the pivot
- When within tolerance, tighten the lock nut and re-measure — tightening can shift the table slightly
Factory set screws: Some drill presses have factory-set adjustment screws under the table that set the tram stop position — when the table is brought back to vertical, it stops at the factory setting. If yours has these, adjust the set screw position rather than the table lock.
Left-Right vs. Front-Back Tilt
Most drill press tables only tilt on one axis (left-right) — the tilting mechanism is a pivot that allows the table to angle for bevel drilling. Front-to-back tilt is usually fixed at the factory and requires shimming or column adjustment to correct. If you have significant front-to-back tilt and the machine has no adjustment:
- Shim under the column foot if the machine can be leveled that way
- Accept the limitation and avoid close-tolerance reaming on that axis
- For precision work, mount a sine plate or angle plate on the table and reference the work off that known surface rather than the table
After Tramming
Once the table is trammed, mark the correct position with a paint pen or Sharpie line across the tilt joint. This lets you return to zero quickly after any intentional tilt operation without re-doing the full check.
Recheck tram after any table crash, heavy clamping operation that could shift the table, or moving the machine.
Twenty minutes of tramming produces cleaner holes, better reaming results, and less frustration trying to figure out why a pin won't press in straight. It's the kind of maintenance task that separates a precision shop from one that's fighting problems they don't understand.
